QUICK START FOR NFBC

The boxing season will be off to a quick start for Niagara Falls Boxers Tyler Brooks (seem at left) and Jeffery Venzon (seen at right). After enjoying a short holiday off, these boys will be hitting the ring on September 12 at the Cabbagetown Boxing Club. Tyler Brooks (NFBC) is taking on Jhaed Credo (CTBC) and Jeffery Venzon (NFBC), who is making his third attempt to debut, will be matched up with Connor Judge (CTBC). The action takes place at the Cabbagetown Boxing Club at 2 Lancastor Avenue in Toronto. The show starts at 3pm and tickets are available at the door.

Tyler and Jeffery have known about the match for a few weeks, so their holiday was cut short to get back into the gym. Neither boy was upset about the short holiday as its been a tough year for NFBC fighters thus far. Hopefully, this is a sign of things to come for the 2010/2011 boxing season. -August 30

NFBC FIGHT SHOW - CANCELED!

Sadly, due to last minute cancelations of most of the match ups on the NFBC fight card the show that was scheduled on July 25th was canceled. Better luck in the new fight season for our boxers.

The gym is closed for the month of August and will reopen September 7th at 6pm. Have a safe and fun summer and wee you in September. All Welcome to join in the fun! - July 26

100KM TRAILWALKER COMPLETED

The Oxfam Trailwalker was completed by half of the Niagara Falls Boxing Club Team in 35 hours 10 minutes and 21 seconds. Stephanie Van Zandwyk and Andrea Moore crossed the finish line with an assortment of other teams to meet the mandatory 3 person traveling group. Their finish placed them 60th out of 111 teams that finished and 118 teams that started.

The trails on this course were novice in technique but quite hilly. The event started at 9am sharp on July 23rd with a climb up a gradual 50 meter elevation. Beginning the event was Sydney Hawken, Erin Rose Swatman, Andrea Moore and Stephanie Van  Zandwyk (C). Seeing the ladies off were support crew Marty Van Zandwyk, Joe Treflik and Dan Petz.

The 100km trail was divided into 10 sections with 9 checkpoints to meet with the support crew and one rest stop. The first section was 10.6km. All members of the team walked into checkpoint 1 and rested for 30 minutes and were off again. Section 2 was 11.7km to a rest stop where Sydney Hawken was removed by EMS staff due to massive heat exhaustion. This was a sad time for the team as Sydney truly wanted to finish this task. She is on board for next year and training will commence mid August 2010 to ensure a strong finish for the 2011 event. The remaining team members carried on to checkpoint 2 which was located 5.7km down the trail. This section included going through a culvert under the 400 highway!!

At checkpoint 2, the team suffered another loss as Erin Rose Swatmen decided she could no longer continue. With only 28km under their belt after 11 hours, team NFBC had some serious catching up to do. No time for rest at checkpoint 2, it was closing as Andrea and Stephanie were heading out to try to catch up with another team. They were almost pulled from the event as they were leaving the checkpoint as a two-some, which for safety, isn't really allowed. With some convincing and the fact that another team had left only 10 minutes prior, team NFBC was able to carry on the 10.8km checkpoint 3.

Lucky for team NFBC, they ran into four teams along their way and joined up with team Intrepid who was going to loose a member upon arrival at checkpoint 3. After a much needed 45 minutes of rest at checkpoint 3, the merging team of NFBC and team Intrepid were off to conquer the trails on the way to checkpoint 4. The ladies really wanted to make up some time. This section was a gruling trail loop of hills, hills and more hills. Elevation changes on this 8.8km trail exceeded 100m.

With the arrival at checkpoint 4, team Intrepid lost another member. After a short rest, the merger team headed out to checkpoint 5, 11.3km away where it was decided that a 2 hour rest was in order. During their stay at checkpoint 5, NFBC met up with another two-some in need of a team to join on with, team GI Janes joined on with the motley crue. Now made of 6 members from 3 teams they were now referring to each other as "The Misfits".

A short distance (9.9km) to checkpoint 6 but again, full of elevation changes and GI Janes lost one member, bringing "The Misfits" back down to 5. Only three sections of the trail remain and the farthest distance (12.7km) is up next. The team is 68.8km into this event and there is no turning back now. Away they went to attack the 75m elevation changes on this section, along with the first major stretches of road walking.

With the long section out of the way, the teams are really feeling the 81.5km hike. The support team (as great as they have been all along), stepped up their game at checkpoint 7 to keep the team spirits high. Joe was quick to get some food and beverages served up, Dan was working to make sure that all body parts were as comfortable as they could be and Marty was fast with the water refills and the ice bath for tired feet. A shoe change was in order as hiking boots came off and running shoes went on. Away they went to checkpoint 8 (9km).

The Misfits quickly found out that this section was SWAMP!! With careful navigation and selective foot placement, it was conquered with minimal wet feet. The ladies arrived at checkpoint 8, tired, but thrilled that they were in the home stretch. Only 9km to go! Knowing that this section was mainly road walking, after a short rest they were off. Realizing that they had 2 hours and 40 minutes to meet their original collective 36 hour goal, the Misfits decided to step up their game and meet it.

Arriving at the finish line in Orillia at 8:10pm on July 24th was sheer joy. Having completed the task that seemed so impossible back at checkpoint 2, when NFBC was nearly removed from the event. Finishing in the center of the pack from being last felt amazing. The task was completed 50 minutes ahead of schedule with a total completion time of 35:10:21. Thanks to team Intrepid and team GI Janes for an excellent experience. Thanks to our support team who did anything and everything required to keep us comfortable, fed and hydrated. Thanks to all of our supporters who helped us along the way by donating and offering your kind words of support.

Team Niagara Falls Boxing Club exceeded the original goal of fundraising by $1000, raising $3500 in total for Oxfam Canada and exceeded the completion time goal of 36:00:00 hours by finishing in 35:10:21 hours.  -July 25

 NFBC FIGHT SHOW

Come on out to NFBC to see a summer fight show July 25 at 2pm. Tickets are available at the door for $15.00 each and food and beverages are available at the show. On the card thus far are Warren Gauthier, Tyler Brooks, Jeffery Venzon and Tanner Warner. NFBC has gotten an excellent response for this show and we are looking forward to having many more bouts to add.

QUEBEC CUP 2010 - CANCELED!

A big disappointment for NFBC boxers today. The Quebec Cup has been canceled for another year. A letter came from Alain Boismenu from Techno Box telling of the sad news. The letter stated that "with deepest regret that due to situations beyond my control, as well as an air of distrust, that I am forced to cancel this years edition of the Quebec Cup. Without being able to guarantee the quality of the event, this decision could not be avoided."

Hopefully the Quebec Cup will make it's return in 2011.  -June 19

SCAVENGER HUNT FUNDRAISER & SPARRING SUCCESSFUL

On June 13th, the Niagara Falls Boxing club was hopping all day long! Events started with a Scavenger Hunt that took participants all over the Niagara Region looking for photos with various items, places and people such as sports cars, washrooms and people in uniform. Participants were also responsible for retrieving items such as safety pins, snowshoes and bowling trophys! If that wasn't enough, there were trivia questions that needed to be answered along the way. The game took about four hours and all players were well entertained. The team called "The Boys" won the $45 cash prize followed by "Team Steelers" and "The Rankin Ladies" respectively. The two runner up teams both received prizes as well. Great job to all participating players and we look forward to another hunt coming up in autumn.

After the Scavenger Hunt was over, everyone settled in for an evening of sparring. In the ring, along with Niagara Falls Boxing Club fighters were competitors from Steeltown, Chris Johnson Fighting Alliance and Nappers Boxing Club. Sparring started at 6pm and carried on until about 9:30pm non-stop.

A great night full of learning and friendship for all boxers and coaches involved. A big thanks to the volunteers who kept the food and beverages stocked up while the boxers were getting busy in the ring. Thanks to all the clubs that made the journey to Niagara Falls Boxing Club and we look forward to more events such as this one in the new boxing season.

TANNER WARNER IN GUELPH

It was a good night at the fights for Tanner Warner on May 14th. Tanner had the support of a number of Niagara Falls Boxers as he made his way up to Cowboys Bar in Guelph. Tanner was up against an opponent that was much taller and 7lbs heavier than himself. The first round proved to be a tough one however, Tanner quickly figured out his opponent and by the third and fourth rounds Tanner was feeling confident. In the end, the decision was unanimous that Tanner was the victor of the bout. Way to go Tanner!!

NIAGARA FALLS BOXING CLUB IN THE COMMUNITY

NFBC is an active member of the Niagara Region community.  On May 2nd Stephanie and Megan were off to St. Catharines to join in with the Bayshore Home Health Services Hike of Hospice team. Money raised from that event totaled more then $70 000. All funds will go to the Niagara Hospice located on Ontario Street in St. Catharines. This hospice is used by all members of the Niagara Region.

May 8th was the first Saturday BoxFit class held to raise money for Oxfam Canada. This class added $40 to the current totals. We have now raised 66% of our goal. Niagara Falls Boxing Club is being represented by the Trailwalker team of Stephanie, Sydney, Andrea and Erin. These ladies will be trailwalking 100km in less then 48 hours.   HUNGER4CHANGE SUCCESS

The Oxfam Trailwalkers Niagara Falls Boxing Club 2010 Team had a successful event at NFBC on March 20th. The turn out was smaller then expected, but there was no shortage of generosity. The event helped the team add $665 dollars to their fund raising total. Many people bought tickets but did not attend however, the 25 people that came out for the evening actively enjoyed an illustration of world hunger.

Participants were served one of three meals, decided by a random draw in which their income level was determined. The high income group (15%) enjoyed a gourmet mediterranean style meal with all the fixings. The medium income level group (25%) were served a basic recipe for beans and brown rice. The largest group, low income (60%) were served 1/4 cup of white rice and 3oz of water. Volunteer MC Sheila, provided some enlightening information about the problem of world hunger. Looking around the room, participating in the event helped all 25 pairs of eyes to see the issues in a new way.

Free beer tasting was popular with guests. Sampling included "Light" & "Logger Lager", the creations of Niagara's Best Brewery & Pub. Also, extremely popular was the gorgeous cake made by Donna of "Donna's Simple and Elegant Cakes" which was served to all after the meal along with coffee and tea.

The door prizes were generously provided by Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours (2 free passes for the 2010 season), Bayshore Home Health ($100 gift bag) and Fort Erie Golf Club (4 free passes) were won by Lolly, Nik & Irene and Laurie respectively. Congratulations!!

Other sponsors included Pan Cafe, Starbucks, Niagara's Best Brewery & Pub, Donna's Simple & Elegant Cakes, Niagara Falls Boxing Club and a few prize donations made by the team itself. All this generosity didn't end at the prize table, people at the function reached deeper into their pockets to sponsor kilometers for the gals along with standard donations. Thanks to all our sponsors, volunteers and especially the participants in the event. It was a fun evening for everyone and it made us all realize just how lucky we all are, even when things aren't going our way. -March 21, 2010

 PASTA NIGHT FUNDRAISER A SUCCESS

For the 3rd year running, Niagara Falls Boxing Club has enjoyed another pasta night fundraiser. This event had over 80 people showing up this year for some dinner! Everyone loves having Ron in the kitchen serving up plates of pasta with homemade meatballs and sauce. Lolly was busily restocking buns, salads and beverages while everyone chowed down to their hearts content. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped with the event by selling tickets, bringing desserts and spreading the word. Also, many thanks goes out to those companies and individuals who provided us with some excellent door prizes for this event.

All the money raised this year will help sponsor Tanner Warner to attend the Canadian National Championships in Halifax, Nova Scotia later this month.   CLUB SHOW CANCELED

January 28th, 2010

The club show that was scheduled to occur on February 6th, 2010 has been canceled. A total drag for NFBC, but don't worry fight fans we WILL have a show and when we do, you'll be the first to know!

You can still come out and support the gym, as we will be announcing the date of our annual PASTA NIGHT FUNDRAISER in the very near future. Get everyone together to get your tickets because they go FAST!!  Ron's special pasta sauce brings the crowds from near and far. This year, money raised will help send our Tanner Warner to the National Finals in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Other monies raised will help keep the gym running by way of equipment, rental fees and maintenance costs. Niagara Falls Boxing Club is not for profit and all coaches and trainers are volunteers, without the support of our members, friends and families this boxing facility would be no more. Thanks for your support.

This webpage is LONG over due for a revamp and it's coming! Watch for all new photos and format in the second week of February.

Our Scottie "THE SPARK" Paul (5-4, 1ko) was unsuccessful this time around at the Hershey Centre. It was an excellent match, however the judges awarded a split decision, separated by a single point, to Harrison McBain (3-2-1) after a long deliberation while tallying the scorecards. Scottie was awesome in the ring however, he admittedly had some things to work on. Obviously disappointed with the decision, our Scottie is not going to take "no" for an answer. He will not let anyone take the wind out of his sails. That is what make him a true champion!

FINAL DECISION

January 7th, 2010

Scottie "THE SPARK" Paul will be close to home on January 16th, 2010! Get you tickets now from Scottie "THE SPARK" himself by calling Niagara Falls Boxing Club at (905) 354-79O8. It's going to be a great night at the fights, don't miss out.

Only two days into 2010 and our Scottie "THE SPARK" Paul has two match-ups to choose from! A call received by manager Ron Gallen may have Scottie "THE SPARK" in Edmonton on January 22nd - instead of Mississauga on the 16th. Turns out Omar Valdez (5-2-3, 2ko) is interested in a match up.

Stay tuned for the final word in the next few days.
