Warner Success at the Industry Theater

November 29th, 2008

Tanner Warner was the first of three NFBC boxers in the ring at the Industry Theater in Sarnia this past Saturday. Tanner took on Nolan Evens of Lambton. It was a fine battle, for all 3, 2 minite rounds. Tanner maintained control of the ring for all three rounds, earning a unanimous decision. Way to go Tanner!

Next up was Bob Potter vs. Kevin Higson of Steeltown. This match was 3 rounds at 3 minites, a rarity in amateur boxing. Potter & Higson rose to the occasion and dispayed an excellent showing of superior boxing skill. It was a painfully close match. In the end, Higson was awarded the win on a split decision. This bout won "Fight of the Night" and captured the attention of the entire crowd. A great victory for Potter.

The main event was NFBC's Matt Flynn vs. Chad Bigras from Alberta. These two really put on an excellent event for the Sarnia crowd. Flynn had his hands full with this more experianced fighter but held his own for all 4, 2 minite rounds.. Final score...Bigras was the victor however, Matt takes away some valuable lessons he will incorperate into his training for the Canadian National Tournament.

Head Coach Ron Gallen was thrilled with the preformance of the team. He can be quoted in saying "Listen boys, you all did what you were asked, you stuck to the game plan and I am very proud of you."

Thanks to Bluewater Boxing for putting on an excellent show and inviting NFBC to be a part of it. Thanks to the officials, doctor and volunteers without whom there would be no boxing shows. A special thanks to all the fans and supporters that attend our boxing events to keep combat sports alive and well in Ontario.

Warrior Challenge IV

November 25th, 2008

The members of NFBC were surprised with a warrior challenge last night. Sixteen members showed up for training to be greeted with three stations bearing the names "Prison Game", "HB Combo Station" and "Weight Station".

We topped the night off with a team game called "Army Waddle Race" and then a rigorous abdominal workout done together as a group. This was by far the hardest challenge to date and all members did their very best to succeed. Coaches were proud to see the efforts put forth by the members of NFBC.

WAY TO GO GUYS!

Disappointment at Seneca Niagara
November 17th, 2008

Niagara Falls Pro Boxing Club member Scottie "The Spark" Paul (3-2, 1ko) had a disappointing weekend at Seneca Niagara Casino in Niagara Falls, NY. Paul had waited patiently for six months for the opportunity to box close to home. Finally, the contracts came through and were signed less then two weeks ago. Paul was scheduled to box Khadaphi Proctor (4-2-1) of California, USA, however Paul's opponent was changed, for the third time, at the last moment.
Scottie "The Spark" Paul (3-2, 1ko) engaged Josh "Steamin" Beeman (4-2-2, 2kos) from Providence, Rhode Island. Paul came out strong scoring the first blows but "Steamin" Beeman quickly returned with some heavy hands. Paul was forced to take a quick knee when Beeman landed a solid blow. The match lasted only 1min 40sec when it was stopped by the referee after Paul suffered some hard shots on the chin. Paul remained standing through the attack however, for the safety of the boxer the referee thought it best to end the match.
Scottie "The Spark" Paul exited the ring to roars from his many fans that came out to support him in the most recent match.

Thank you to Seneca Niagara for putting on an excellent show, we look forward to being part of your boxing events in the future.

Victory Weekend for NFBC
November 10th, 2008

Over this past weekend NFBC enjoyed two victories.

On November 9th, at the Kombat Arts Club in Mississauga ON, Charles Irvine of NFBC took on Andre Stewart of King of the Ring. It's been over a year since our Charles has been in the ring, he showed no signs of ring rust what so ever. Charles was in control of the match from the start, opening with three heavy shots. After an exciting four rounds Charles Irvine was the victor! Coach Scott Copeland was quoted as saying "He's back...this fight, Charles didn't come to go the distance, he came to WIN!"
Watch the fight on You Tube

A former member of NFBC, heavyweigh pro, "Fast" Eddie Dawson (8-3, 7kos) showed his skills November 8th in the ring over in Halifax. Currently boxing out of "Palooka's Boxing" in Halifax NS, "Fast"Eddie has continued an outstanding comeback to the boxing ring after six years serving with the Canadian Navy. This past weekend was no exception. Dawson (8-3,7kos) KOed his opponent Curtis "Hitman" Murray (6-4-1, 6kos) of Barbados in the fourth round of a scheduled six rounder. This must have been a battle, looking at "Hitman" Murray's record, he's no slouch. Keep the KO's coming Eddie! Can't wait to see you in our neighborhood.

Contract Signed!
November 6th, 2008

It's been a couple of weeks of wondering "who's it going to be??" for professional boxer, Scottie "The Spark" Paul (3-1, 1ko) and manager/coach, Ron Gallen. The contract has finally arrived and is signed!
Scottie "The Spark" Paul (3-1, 1ko) of Niagara Falls, Canada will be taking on Khadaphi Proctor (4-2-1) of California, USA at Seneca Niagara Casino on November 15th. Get your tickets quick, as they are selling out fast. Come on over and support "The Spark" in his 5th match up. Help show Seneca Niagara Casino that the Niagara Region is interested to see our local boxers in action.

Provincial Tournament Results

November 3rd, 2008

On November 1st, Head Coach Ron Gallen and open boxer Bobby Potter were off to Oshawa for the Provincial Tournament. Bobby Potter was matched up with Stewart Boyd of McGrorys Boxing Club on day two of the tournament. Potter and Boyd met in the Provincial Tournament in 2006. It was an excellent battle for both. Head Coach Ron was confident in Potters conditioning and skills. Potter and Boyd had another great session. Both boxers were ready and wanted to fight. Boyd was the winner of the day despite excellent efforts from Potter. Congratulations on a great match. We look forward to the next time these two pugilists meet.
Novice boxer Matt Flynn was also scheduled to box at this tournament, however there was no opponent for him to pair up with.
At the tournament this year, it was noted that the officials were doing an excellent job, thanks to all involved.

NFBC & Project S.H.A.R.E
October 20th, 2008

This past Saturday, NFBC had an open house with an open sparring session & food collection for Project S.H.A.R.E. We invited 3 other clubs to join us but unfortunately, for reasons unknown, they didn't show. It was a temporary disappointment. NFBC was hosting about 20 visitors and the NFBC boxers were not about to let this minor set back ruin the day. All the boxers stepped up and sparred each other, raising the bar to a new level.

The people that were visiting the club were well impressed with the skills displayed by all boxers. Some visitors had never really seen live boxing before and were questioning the strategies used. They were fascinated at the amount of thought that goes into a boxing match.

The boxers of the day, certainly didn't go easy on each other. This made it an enjoyable time for the spectators and a great learning experience for our fighters. We have three members heading off to the Provincial Tournament at the end of the month and this was an excellent session for them.

This was also opportunity for some of the  novice boxers that have never boxed in front of "outside" spectators before. NFBC Head Coach Ron Gallen was happy that the new boxers had this opportunity. It is a trademark of the NFBC boxers that we don't give up so easily when in difficult situations. We will ALWAYS rise to the occasion and turn any situation into something positive and this was no exception.

NFBC was thrilled to have collected about 100lbs of food for Project S.H.A.R.E! We are going to continue collections throughout the holiday season. Thank you for everyones generosity as many people arrived with grocery bags full of food to put in the bin. Making our endever even more successful then we had anticipated.

NFBC is looking forward to hosting more open sparring events in the future. We feel that this has been a missed opportunity for clubs to get together and for boxers to gain valuable ring experience. If your club is interested (Boxing Ontario or OBA registered clubs) give us a call!!
A big thank you to everyone who helped make this day successful!
See you at the next event.

Scottie "The Spark" Paul & "Fast" Eddie Dawson

October 12th, 2008

Scottie "The Spark" Paul (3-1, 1tko) will be on the card at Casino Rama on November 21. Rumored opponent is Harrison McBain also of Niagara Falls. Niagara Falls Pro Manager Ron Gallen awaits the official contract arrival.

"Fast" Eddie Dawson (7-3, 6kos) is still out on the East Coast making his way through any opponent that Palooka's Boxing set him up with. Dawson will be in the ring again on November 8th. If your out in Halifax, check it out.

October Fitness Challenge
October 7th, 2008

On October 2nd, 20 members of NFBC took part in a fitness challenge. All members that participated worked hard and had a great time displaying their skills and competing agains themselves and each other. Three teams were lead by boxers Matt, Charles and Bobby. All teams displayed much enthusiasm and efforts at each of the three stations compiled by pro boxer/coach Stephanie.

Boxers excelled at the group activities at the end where there was a 100lb farmers walk and a 130lb body drag (special thanks to our volunteer!) Three boxers stood out of the crowd, and were rewarded with new beanies. They were Jeremy, Brandon and Warren. Way to go guys!

Bobby's plan is to polish up that right hand of his and get it working to his advantage. Bob has a great left, his opponent, at this tournament told Bob about his great RIGHT.

Rob had a rollercoaster ride at the tournament but remains true to boxing and all it's ups and downs. Rob is ready to settle in for some serious sport specific training.

Tyler did a great job at this tournament. He is returning to the gym to proceed with more training for future victories.

Quebec Cup 2008 - Sunday Team Update
June 30th, 2008
The last bout for NFBC was on Sunday at noon. Tanner Warner fought in the final session and was able to capture the cup! Tanner came back from a 3 point deficit heading into the final round. The final score was tied and Tanner won via a count back on the scorecard. Head Coach Ron Gallen is pleased with Tanner performance as this is Tanners first tournament and he arrived in Quebec with no ring experience. Way to go Tanner!
Quebec Cup 2008 - Saturday Team Update
June 29th, 2008
Tanner Warner on card for final session Sunday at noon.
June 29th at 12 noon
Tanner Warner (ON) vs.
A busy and exciting day at the Quebec Cup 2008 for NFBC. Four boxers were ready to show their skills. Rob Adams and Tanner Warner during the 1pm session and Tyler Warner and Matt Flynn in the evening.
Tanner Warner boxed a very successful bout and moves into the final round tomorrow at noon. Head Coach Ron Gallen is thrilled that this boxer has done so well at these early stages of his amateur career. Tanner arrived at the tournament with no ring experience other then sparring and has really done incredibly well. NFBC knows that Tanner will have a great match up tomorrow. Tanner is very excited to be on the final show.
Rob Adams was also on the afternoon card Saturday. This match went 2 rounds and ended in disappointment. The first round was action packed as both boxers were trying to figure one another out. In the second, Rob got caught with a right and was knocked out. Moments later, Rob was ready to continue but then realized the match was over. Adams is taking this minor set back as a learning experience and will be using it to fuel the fire for serious training. Rob had an excellent tournament and NFBC is proud to have him as part of the team for this  and future sessions.
The evening brought Tyler Warner to the ring. This bout went all three rounds, both Warner and Capibianco put on a great bout. The decision went to Capibianco. Tyler Warner did his best against the more experience boxer and both coaches and on lookers were happy with his performance. Tyler had a great first tournament and NFBC looks forward to him being a part of the traveling team in the future.
Matt Flynn was boxing Anthony Carpin from France again in this double elimination set up. These were the only two boxers in this division and you must box twice to capture the Cup. Flynn showed some nerves in the first round but was able to fend off Carpin. The second round brought the "all business" Flynn back to the ring to capture a TKO from Anthony Carpin for the win. Matt Flynn is the 2008 Junior Mens 91kg Quebec Cup Champion. Flynn also retains his undefeated record. Coach Matt Campbell and Head Coach Ron Gallen and all of NFBC couldn't be happier with Flynn's performances in the ring. Matt Flynn is looking ahead to more victories in the future.

Tanner Warner (ON) vs.
June 28th at 7pm - Ring Techno-Box

Bout 11 Matt Flynn vs. Anthony Carpin (France)
It was a disappointing afternoon for Rob Adams, he suited up for his match against Matt Whitford of Nova Scotia on Friday afternoon only to find that his match had be canceled. Rob did move to the next round and would box on Saturday during the 1pm session. Rob was able to join the Warner brothers and Matt Flynn for another rest day during the tournament.
Saturday night brought Levi O'Brien and Bobby Potter to the ring for their sudden death match ups. Levi was taking on south paw, Rob Umbach from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Levi gave a good match up but was defeated by decision after the three rounds played out. Levi had a great tournament and looks forward to polishing his skills against left handed boxers. O'Brien is determined to "figure those south paws out and defeat them".
Bobby Potter was up 3 bouts later, to take on Quebecs Abdul Ahmir. Potter and Ahmir went the full three rounds for the last match up of the evening. It was a disappointing decision in the end for Potter. Bobby is looking ahead to honing his skills for victory in the future. Head Coach Ron Gallen was happy with these efforts from his open fighters during the tournament both open boxers were a great asset to this team during the tournament. Head Coach Ron and Coach Matt Campbell now focuses all attention to the novice team. All four novice competitors are on the Saturday card.

King of the Ring Boxing brought along 162lbs boxer James Davis to take on Tyler Warner from NFBC. This bout went the distance of all three rounds. It was a battle, both boxers had their time to shine. NFBC's Tyler Warner won the bout with a unanimous decision from the judges. Nice fight Tyler!

The main event of the night was a crowd pleaser as NFBC's Levi O'Brien hosted Dave Findale from Uptown Boxing. This was a four round match that both boxers were well prepared for. The crowd cheered as the punches flew at a seemingly unstoppable pace. Both boxers were in great shape. Levi is a force to be reckoned with as he took the unanimous decision at the end of the fight. Olympic athlete Roland Moses, a former NFBC boxer, was on hand to present the awards for our main event. Best of luck to Roland as he travels to China later this year to box for his homeland.
NFBC would like to thank all the boxers and clubs that made it out for a great night of boxing. Also, we thank the officials and the doctor without whom the night would not have occurred. Thanks to all the helpers and volenteers who set up, took down and did everything in between. See you next time!

Fundraiser a Big Success
May 28th, 2008
Thanks to all that came out this past weekend to support NFBC's first spaghetti dinner fundraiser. A great time was had by all, and the food came out of the kitchen at break neck speed. Ron and Lolli worked up a sweat as more hungry people filed into the kitchen.
A special thanks to Donna Irvine who prepared all the desserts including two beautiful boxing glove cakes. Thanks also goes out to all the parent volunteers who helped with the service and to keep things running smoothly. NFBC would also like to thank Adrian Goemans from
Goemans Lakeshore Meats and Mark Mitchel from Buns Master Bakery for their generous donations to help make this fundraiser a big success for our gym.

Ladies Boxfit Walks for Hospice Niagara
May 4th, 2008

Ladies Only BoxFit trainer Stephanie is proud to say that Mary and Wendy from the Ladies Only Boxfit Class joined her for the Hospice Niagara 5km walk on May 4th. Mary was joined by daughter Jackie (member of NFBC) and friend Darla, Wendy brought along her friend Wendy (aka "the Wendys"). All ladies completed the walk with ease and enjoyed a great day of sun and exercise. This group helped to raise the $25 000 in donations collected that day for Hospice Niagara. A new record for them, by the way.
The walk itself started at Hospice Headquarters on Ontario Street in St. Catharines. We then headed north into Port Dalhousie, down to the beach, up Hogans Ally south up Ontario, south east on Lake Street to Linwell Road and back to Ontario Street.
Everyone had a nice day in the sun and all are looking forward to take part in more community events over 2008. Watch for us, and if you have any questions about NFBC feel free to approach and ask.

NFBC Boxers Host Sparring Days with Visiting Clubs
May 3 & 4, 2008
Niagara Falls Boxing Club welcomed two clubs over two days for sparring this past weekend. On May 3rd NFBC welcomed Nappers Boxing Club from Welland for training and sparring. Coach Ray Napper brought along amateur boxers Dylan Simons and Star Jackman. It was a spectacular day of sparring and learning together. Sparring for NFBC on the 3rd were open amateurs Bobby Potter and Levi O'Brien.
The following day, NFBC opened it's doors up to welcome Brantfords Coach Billy Williams and his professional boxers Chris Aucoin and Paul Watson. There to match up with the pros were open amateurs Bobby Potter, Levi O'Brien and Charles Irvine. Another day of outstanding training commenced.
NFBC is happy to open up for mixed sparring with any club with registered boxers. Safe and controlled conditions are ensured, as Ron Gallon believes that this type of interaction is great experience for all the boxers involved, in and out of the ring. It gives a chance to see other types of coaching and different boxing styles that develop in other clubs. An opportunity to make friends in the boxing community between members and staff is invaluable to keep the sport going in Ontario.
If your club is interested in sparring with NFBC in our club or in yours, please call Ron at 905 354 7918 to set up dates and times.

Victory in Windsor
April 21, 2008

A great time was had by NFBC members who headed up to Windsor on April 19th. NFBC's Matt Flynn was up against Sarnia's Nolan Evens. This was Matts first time in the ring and he was ready. Matt was relaxed and hit Nolan with some great straight punches. The bout was over when Evens didn't answer the bell at the start of the second round.
Levi O'Brien was the ninth bout on the card. He was boxing with East Windsor's Kareem Abead. This match up went the scheduled three rounds. Both fighters were ready. Levi was landing some commanding shots on Kareem who maintained his composure throughout. Levi won the match up by way of split decision.
Tyler Warner was match up number ten on this eleven bout card. His debut was made against Wasseem El-Sinawi from WABC. All three rounds were full of punches in bunches from our Tyler. Wasseem was feeling overwhelmed in the first round. Both boxers settled in for the next two rounds and had an excellent match. Tyler was disappointed with a loss by decision but is happy to have gained experience in the ring. Tyler is looking forward to his next match up.
Coach Ron was pleased with the showing of all the NFBC boxers. He said "It was a great day and everyone fought well. That is all that I ask for. I am proud of all the boys." Rob Adams III was schdualed to box on this card as well but his opponent ran into some problems at the boarder and was unable to attend.
NFBC would like to thank the Windsor Club for the invitation to box on their show.

NFBC Conquers the Tower
April 12, 2008

NFBC had a good turn out of members to climb the stairs at the Skylon Tower this morning. The top story was the competition between members Levi O'Brien and Bobby Potter, who both took the morning off work to accept the challenge placed before them.  It started with an off the cuff remark made by Potter last week, "I'll be at the top twice before Levi gets halfway up" he claimed. News of this made it's way back to Levi and the gloves came off. Levi declared to Bobby "When God made stairs, He had me in mind." This banter has been going on all week....leading up to the big day!
In other parts of the gym, the women's boxfit class was presented with the challenge of making their way up. This challenge was laid down by women's boxfit trainer Stephanie
who had total confidence that all participants could do the climb. NFBC Ladies Only Boxfit was represented by Jen, Liz and Lolly (pictured below with trainer/boxer Stephanie).
The team members of the NFBC that made the climb, (pictured below, starting at the top left side) included Robbie, Jack, Levi, Bobby, Brian, Coach Lolly, Scott, Nahtanha, Warren, Tyler and Stephanie.

When all members were accounted for, donations turned in (which added up to just over $1000 dollars!!) Everyone lined up to hit the stairs. Levi and Bobby of course were out front. When they were ready they both disappeared up the stairs like a shot. After that we all headed up at our own pace. Everyone was at the top in less then 23 minutes. WAY TO GO!!
Upon reaching the top everyone was anxious to know who won the Skylon 660? and how fast did they do it?

Bobby Potter was victorious this time with a staggering time of 5 min and 28 sec! That time was met with many astounded looks by some nearby on lookers. We think that maybe Bobby might hold the record for fastest up the tower. More on that on later this week. Levi came in at an impressive 5 min and 57 sec. A great showing by both athletes. Another chapter in the ongoing and ever entertaining competition between these two fighters.
Other members of NFBC participated in the climb, but they decided to head up with their respective schools or other organizations.
To everyone who helped raise some money for Cancer Research, came out and had a great time this morning at the Skylon and climbed all 660 steps CONGRATULATIONS & THANK YOU!
This years climb is dedicated to Karen Kathleen Paul who was fighting cancer for 2 years before she succumbed earlier this year.
She will be missed, however, when she is missed, she is remembered and when she is remembered,
she is remembered with great joy.

First NFBC Challenge
February 29th, 2008
Upon arrival at the gym for training on February 28th, members of NFBC were met with a bit of a surprise. The coaching and training staff had a fitness challenge laid out for them. Some members were apprehensive at first and others were anxious to get started.
Head coach Ron Gallen explained each station to the group, pointing out the best way to get the most from each station. Each station had a coach or trainer posted at it to ensure proper technique and time keeping.
Four stations were set up and the large group was split into three teams each with a captain. The stations focused on different aspects of combat sport training. Many of the exercises hadn't been used at NFBC before others, were somewhat familiar but delivered with a bit of a twist. Each was team moving from station to station eager to push themselves to the limit. We finished off with a group session of abdominal training. Seventy five minutes later, members emerged from this session, sweat soaked and worked out.
The coaching and training staff were very pleased with the efforts put forth by all members of NFBC. Everyone did their best and showed what they were made of. There was no room for slackers during this training session. Congratulations to all members who participated!
NFBC looks forward to running these sessions monthly. Members enjoyed the hard workout and variety of exercises that were offered. Thanks to all involved in setting up and running the course. Special thanks to Liz for taking the photos.

Stephen Marsh Boxes in Halifax

February 8th, 2008

Last night at the Halifax Casino NFBC's Stephen Marsh took on Tyson Cave in his fourth professional bout.

Stephen and his trainer /father Leo Marsh, flew out to Halifax on Wednesday to take on Tyson Cave aka "The Prince of Hali". Stephen was focused and ready to box this six round match. Stories of trash talk made it's way back and forth between the two competitors. There was an on going discussion between fans of the boxers as to who would win this anticipated bout.

Upon their arrival on the east coast, they were made comfortable in their hotel and awaited the weigh-in. A test weight at a club in Halifax put Stephen just under the required 126lb mark. However, at the official weigh in a short time later, both boxers weighed in over the mark. Tough talk was exchanged between the two teams and an agreement was made to accommodate the match-up.
This card was a pro-am show. Marsh and Tyson being the only professional match up on the card and the obvious main event. Cave had a much softer touch then Marsh during the match up. Seconds in, Marsh hammered Cave giving him a bloody nose that persisted throughout the match. Cave had to rely on his speed and footwork to avoid Marshes crushing blows. Marsh hurt his left hand during the second round restricting his punch arsenal. The bout went the full six rounds and proved to be all business between the two. Marsh hurt Cave in the sixth with a strong body shot but unfortunately didn't seal the deal. Cave came out with the decision 59-55, 58-56 and 60-55. This leaves Cave with a record of 5-0-0 and Marsh 1-2-1.
After the match both boxers proved to be respectful of the other showing excellent sportsmenship.
Thanks to Caveman Promotions for putting on an excellent boxing event.
